Our Story
A Story of Purpose, People, and Possibility
It Began With A Vision…
In the early 1990s, a small group in Downpatrick had a clear and heartfelt goal: to offer meaningful residential support to people with learning disabilities. Back then, we were called the Down Residential Project — a name that reflected both our humble beginnings and our deep roots in the local community.
What began with a few committed individuals and a big idea has since grown into Mainstay DRP — a charity with over 130 dedicated staff supporting around 200 individuals across a range of services. While our name has evolved, our mission has stayed the same: to ensure every person we support — and their carers and families — can live a life filled with purpose, belonging, and opportunity.
Why “Mainstay”?
A mainstay is the strong rope that holds a ship’s mast upright. In life, it’s the steady presence that empowers, uplifts, and connects. That’s what we strive to be — a trusted anchor for the people we support, and a catalyst for growth, understanding, and independence.
Our Purpose
We know that behind every person we support there are families and carers who also need encouragement, guidance, and reassurance. We are here for them too — offering partnership, advocacy, and practical help every step of the way.
A Living Legacy
Mainstay DRP is more than a name — it’s decades of dedication, resilience, and hope. It’s the story of a community that came together to say: You matter.
And that message continues to guide us into the future — expanding our services, developing our new Social Enterprise – Silent Cuts, and building new opportunities for people with learning disabilities and/or autism to thrive.
This is our story — and we’re still writing it, together.
