Gregory’s First Hair Salon Visit Marks a Step Toward Greater Independence

We’re thrilled to share a heart-warming success story from our Ardcora Supported Living Service. Gregory, a gentleman with autism who joined our service in June 2025, has recently achieved a personal milestone that deserves celebration.
Until now, Gregory had never attended a hair salon. Haircuts were always done at home, with a visiting hairdresser to help ensure his comfort. However, with gentle encouragement and support from our dedicated team, Gregory recently visited Silent Cuts, Mainstay’s brand-new inclusive hair salon on Scotch Street, Downpatrick — and had his hair cut in a public setting for the very first time.
This achievement is more than just a haircut. It represents a significant step forward in Gregory’s journey toward independence, confidence, and community inclusion. The experience went smoothly, and Gregory left the salon not only looking great but feeling proud of what he had accomplished.

A Salon Built for Everyone

Silent Cuts is no ordinary salon, it’s a calm, sensory-friendly space created specifically to support people with learning disabilities and autism. Designed around comfort and inclusion, the salon offers quiet appointments, gentle lighting, and thoughtful touches such as optional mirrors and minimal background noise. Clients can choose the level of interaction they want, bring familiar items, or enjoy one-to-one sessions in a relaxed environment.
Led by stylist Olwyn McColl, a former Support Worker with Mainstay DRP, Silent Cuts combines professional hairdressing with a deep understanding of each client’s unique needs. Olwyn and the team are passionate about creating a space where everyone can feel safe, welcome, and empowered.
