Caring for Our World Programme

Across Mainstay DRP, something really positive has been growing, a shared commitment to caring for our world and the people in it.

What is the programme?
Caring for Our World is a friendly and easy-to-understand programme that helps people learn about climate change, the environment, and how small everyday actions can make a big difference.

Who took part?
Adults with learning disabilities across our services took part, supported by staff who had completed environmental training and worked alongside partners like Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful.

Together, they created a space where everyone could learn, ask questions, and feel confident about making changes.

Why does it matter?
Looking after the planet can sometimes feel like a big and difficult challenge. But this programme shows that everyone can play a part and that even small steps can lead to meaningful change.

Just as importantly, it gives people the chance to understand these issues in a way that works for them, helping build confidence and independence.

What has changed?
By the end of the programme, each person chose two simple changes to help the environment. These included:
– Turning off lights when they leave a room
– Walking instead of driving when possible
– Washing clothes at lower temperatures
– Having meat-free days
– Donating or reusing clothes

“What’s been really powerful is seeing how our clients are now reminding staff about the changes we can all make. It shows this learning is making a real difference in everyday life.” John

These choices might seem small, but together they make a real difference, not just for the planet, but also by helping to save money at home.

Many of the people who took part are now proud environment champions, sharing what they’ve learned with housemates and encouraging others to get involved.

Looking ahead
There is a real sense of pride and excitement as learners look forward to celebrating their achievements at a graduation event in Queen’s University Belfast this September.

Their journey is a reminder that when people are supported in the right way, they can grow in confidence, make positive choices, and help shape a better future for everyone.
